An overview of car-sharing models
The car-sharing vehicles are located at fixed stations. This means you pick up and return the car at the same designated location. If you can return the car to a different station operated by the same provider, this is known as station-flexible car-sharing.
- No need to search for a parking space: the vehicle is always at the same station
- Flexible booking: on the spur of the moment or weeks in advance
The provider defines a specific urban or business area within which the vehicles are available on a flexible basis. You can pick up and drop off the car almost anywhere within the defined area.
- Convenience: no fixed location required; public parking spaces are sufficient
- Spontaneous use: No booking required – book the vehicle of your choice in real time via the app whenever you need it.
- Tip: Ideal for short, spontaneous trips; long-term bookings are often not possible
This combines the station-based and free-floating models, offering the advantages of both in a single pricing system.
In this model, private cars are rented out by private individuals. As a rule, the match between those offering and those seeking a vehicle is facilitated via an online platform. Although the vehicle is also shared, this form is not defined as car-sharing under german road traffic legislation.
How does it work?
Car-sharing provides transport exactly when you need it. And all without owning a car or incurring ongoing fixed costs. It’s as simple as this:
Registration
Before using the service for the first time, you’ll need to register with a car-sharing provider. This is usually done online or via an app. Once your driving licence has been verified and your identity confirmed – either digitally or in person, depending on the provider – you can book a vehicle straight away. Some providers charge a one-off registration fee.
Book a car
Most providers use an app that shows available vehicles in the vicinity straight away. Select the vehicle you want, set a booking period if necessary, and off you go. The system offers maximum flexibility: journeys can be booked on the spur of the momentSpontaneously, a few minutes in advance, or even weeks ahead for reliable planning.
Get in and drive off
Access to the vehicle is simple and usually keyless, either via the app, a customer card or a terminal at the station. Depending on the provider, the keys, fuel or charging card and the logbook are provided in the vehicle. Once you’ve unlocked the vehicle, you can drive off straight away. Information on refuelling or charging can be found in the app, in the logbook or directly in the vehicle.
Park up and you're done
At the end of the journey, check the fuel level; if it falls below a certain level, the vehicle should be refuelled before parking. Electric vehicles must be connected to a charging point at the station. Depending on the provider or car-sharing model, the vehicle must be returned to the same station (station-based model) or within the service area (free-floating). Je nach Anbieter bzw. Payment
Billing takes place automatically according to the provider’s respective tariff – either based on journey time, distance travelled or a combination of both.
